Watch Manual: 10 Watch Care Tips

To protect your investment and ensure your watch remains a reliable accessory for years to come, we’ve partnered with our watchmakers to share our best tips for watch care.

Regular Cleaning

When a watch becomes dirty, it not only loses its visual appeal but is also more vulnerable to damage from debris entering the delicate mechanisms. For cleaning, we recommend a gentle approach: use a lint-free microfiber polishing cloth to remove dust, dirt, and fingerprints. A slightly damp cloth may also be used, but always make sure the crown is securely closed and avoid getting leather straps wet. However, never use soapy water — the molecules can seep into tiny gaps, potentially causing more harm than good to the case.

Avoid Magnets

Magnetization remains a persistent challenge for mechanical watches. Common household items such as speakers, refrigerators, mobile phones, and even magnetic clasps on handbags can expose your watch to magnetic fields. Even the smallest magnet can disrupt the delicate components, causing your watch to run fast, slow, or even stop altogether.

Fortunately, there’s a simple way to diagnose magnetization: the compass test. Place your watch near a compass; if the needle reacts, wavers, or deviates from its normal position, it’s a strong indication that your watch has been magnetized.

This issue must be addressed promptly to prevent further accuracy problems. While magnetism itself isn’t harmful in the long term, prolonged exposure can increase wear on fine components, potentially affecting overall performance. If you suspect your watch has been magnetized, it’s best to seek professional help to have it demagnetized and restored to proper function.
